The d’Youville Counselling staff has compiled the following information as a result of their liaison with College and University admission representatives. Many of the policies adopted by post-secondary institutions are under yearly review, changes in September will continue to occur. You need to prepare for a post-secondary destination NOW !
College Information
Have you selected the courses needed to be accepted into the college program of your choice. Thisinformation needs to be researched by the end of grade 11 at the latest.

Students will need to present adequate to good grades, (70%) for all programs, particularly the “over-subscribed” programs. Study to the best of your ability!
Grade 11 and 12 marks will be used in determining offers of admission. Some programs look specifically at grade 11 and 12 English and Math marks, (if required for the program). Choose the subject level that will give you the best marks.
Most programs have other criteria needed for admission, (portfolio, interview, resume, audition etc.). Many require the applicant to book a time, not to be missed!
Review secondary school “Diploma Requirements”. Have all compulsories, literacy test, community service hours been completed? You cannot be accepted to a College program without the OSSD, ( Ontario Secondary School Diploma).
Take 7 subjects in grade 12, most of which are of the “C”, “M” or “U” levels. Many courses require pre-requisites.
2 reasons why students drop out of college: i) wrong program, ii) poor finances.
When will you be visiting the Colleges you will be applying to?
When you have your College Diploma you may decide to: go to work, do post-diploma work at College, or apply for advanced standing at University.

University Information
University bound students must have a minimum of 6 subjects at the “U” or “M” level.
This would include all the pre-requisite courses required by the various programs. Each may vary depending on the Institution. (I.e. Physiotherapy requires SPH4U).
All students must have ENG4U. Students new to
All students must have Religion. You may choose HRE4M OR HZT4U. Philosophy
is also a group one compulsory credit.
Students may choose to “jump ahead” by completing a grade 12 U/M in summer school.
Choose your favourite subject, “most” students should avoid English and Math.
Summer school must be done the summer before applying to University. Night school and summer school courses count the same as day school courses.
Students may take more time to complete Secondary School. There is no timeline for applying to University, good educational planning is the key.
Do you know the program that interests you? Which schools offer this program? Do you have the requirements and marks for acceptance? What is your back-up plan?

Competition for spots at Ontario Universities has increased significantly in the last year. This trend will continue for years to come. What can you do to ensure a spot?
- study, work harder, study some more, listen to good advice!

- attend the University fair and information evening in September/October, all presentations, seminars, visit schools this summer
- are you applying to both College and University programs?
- save your money, consider schools outside the GTA.
