The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT)

The following message is forwarded to you on behalf of Director of Education, John B. Kostoff.

Thank you for your contribution to our EQAO success

Last week’s release regarding Dufferin-Peel’s overwhelmingly positive results for Grade 9 EQAO mathematics and the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT), which came on the heels of our highly successful elementary EQAO results, is more tangible proof of the success of our system on all levels. Again, Dufferin-Peel matched or exceeded the provincial results in all areas, by up to 13%. This year’s performance marks the fifth and sixth consecutive years that the board has met or surpassed the provincial results on the secondary and elementary EQAO assessments, respectively.

All this is great news for our students, our schools, and for Catholic education. I wish to thank you all for your work in assisting our board in achieving these results. And, while we all know that EQAO scores are not the only method of assessment, they do receive significant attention in our community. Well-being and student engagement are just as important as EQAO results and our students have also indicated a high degree of success on these points as well.

Our latest results should be gratifying to all of us here in Dufferin-Peel, since we are all involved, to one degree or another, in fostering the conditions for success in student achievement and well-being. Having said that, we recognize the need for further improvement and a refocusing of our efforts, particularly in mathematics, in general, and at some schools, in particular. We will do this over the next year.
