St. Francis Table is a restaurant on Queen Street that serves the poor a meal for a dollar. Paying a dollar is meant to increase the sense of dignity that comes from contributing. The poor are treated like royalty as waiters serve the meal to their table, along with desert with coffee or tea. St. Francis Table has been in Parkdale for over twenty years and on November 24th they served their millionth meal.
St. marguerite d'Youville was honoured to be part of this as our students were volunteering there on that day. The millionth meal was served by d'Youville's Annette Jubril.
The Spirit of Jesus' love and compassion is made flesh in our d'Youville students.
- “d’Youville Turned Their Compassion into Action”
On Friday October 15th 2010, St. Marguerite d’Youville Secondary School hosted its 4th annual Walk-a-thon. The staff and students through the direction of the senior Leadership class raised $20,074.50! The staff and students of d’Youville walked 8km from the school to St. Marguerite d’Youville Roman Catholic Church. The school community together then celebrated Mass together, followed by a BBQ back at school.
The $20,074.50 raised will be directed to Cor Unum, a charity dedicated to helping impoverished children in Gambo, Ethiopia. Cor Unum means “One Love for Africa” and its development projects span the fields of agriculture, education, and healthcare within Africa and specifically Gambo, Ethiopia. The foundation is strictly non-profit and runs on the basis of volunteer work. The Cor Unum Foundation has sent 2000 pounds of school books; funded a clean water project; and launched an English program. The Cor Unum’s summer camp program hosts volunteers from Toronto and Timmins in July and August to teach English as a second language. The program was developed in order to provide the youth of Gambo the opportunity to succeed by providing them with hope for a better tomorrow.
The staff and students of d’Youville, have made an impact on the children of Gambo and made a tremendous difference for a small organization!
Cor Unum is always looking for interested educators to join them in Ethiopia in July and August. If interested please e-mail bethepeacefullchange@gmail.com.
