St Marguerite d'Youville Catholic Secondary School Celebrates 20 years 1995 - 2015

The story of St. Marguerite d’Youville Secondary School is a chronicle of relationships between the faculty, students and parents, who together with virtue and faith have made it their mission to serve young people in the community. The tie that binds our school community together is our patron - Saint Marguerite d’Youville.

About St. Marguerite d'Youville

Marguerite d’Youville, the first Canadian to be elevated to sainthood, was born October 15, 1701, in Varennes, Quebec. Pope John XXIII beatified Marguerite d’Youville on May 3, 1959, calling her the "Mother of Universal Charity" - a well merited title for a woman who continues even today to reach out to the needy with love and compassion.

By age 29, Marguerite d’Youville experienced poverty and suffered the loss of her father and husband. To make matters worse, four of her six children died as infants. Despite these hardships Marguerite d’Youville grew in her belief of God and in his tender love for every human being. She, in turn, wanted to make his compassionate love known to all. She undertook many charitable works with complete trust in God, who she loved as a Father. She provided for the education of her two sons, who later became priests and she welcomed a blind woman into her home. Marguerite d’Youville was soon joined by three young women who shared her love and concern for the poor. On December 31, 1737, they consecrated themselves to God and promised to serve him in the person of the poor. Marguerite d’Youville, without even realizing it, became the founder of the Sisters of Charity of Montreal – an order known as the "Grey Nuns".

Marguerite d’Youville may have been one woman, but this daughter of the Church had a vision of caring for the poor that has spread far and wide.

About St. Marguerite d'Youville The School

Like our patron saint, St. Marguerite d’Youville Secondary School had a very humble beginning. Under the stewardship of Principal Wayne Marchand the school opened its doors in 1995 and welcomed 135 eager and enthusiastic grade 9 and 10 students. The school operated out of the Glenvale campus while planning was underway to build a new and more modern building on Dixie Road. Year after year the student population grew as did the teaching staff, departments and extra-curricular activities.

By 2001, under the directorship of Principal Dave Dolan, planning and construction of the new Dixie Road campus was nearing completion. In September 2002, the new school on Dixie Road was finally complete. Over 800 students accompanied by 80 staff moved into a modern and spacious new building equipped to meet the challenges of teaching and learning in the digital age.

Just as the Springdale community has grown over the last 5 years so has St. Marguerite d’Youville Secondary School. Today, the school community is stronger and more alive than ever. St. Marguerite d’Youville Secondary School has a student population of 2,100 students and 140 staff. It is a vibrant and active school that continues to thrive. St. Marguerite d’ Youville Secondary School offers academic programs and extracurricular activities that are broad in scope and rich in diversity. Under the guidance of Principal Tim Yawney the school is reaching new heights in academic achievement, faith-formation and athletics.

St. Marguerite d’Youville Secondary School is constantly evolving and changing with the times. Grounding the school in its efforts is the school motto: “To Trust, To Risk, To Love, To Serve”. Like St. Marguerite d’Youville, the school reaches out to those in need and does its best to care for the young people of our community in the hope that one day they will take over where we have left off.

The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT)

The following message is forwarded to you on behalf of Director of Education, John B. Kostoff.

Thank you for your contribution to our EQAO success

Last week’s release regarding Dufferin-Peel’s overwhelmingly positive results for Grade 9 EQAO mathematics and the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT), which came on the heels of our highly successful elementary EQAO results, is more tangible proof of the success of our system on all levels. Again, Dufferin-Peel matched or exceeded the provincial results in all areas, by up to 13%. This year’s performance marks the fifth and sixth consecutive years that the board has met or surpassed the provincial results on the secondary and elementary EQAO assessments, respectively.

All this is great news for our students, our schools, and for Catholic education. I wish to thank you all for your work in assisting our board in achieving these results. And, while we all know that EQAO scores are not the only method of assessment, they do receive significant attention in our community. Well-being and student engagement are just as important as EQAO results and our students have also indicated a high degree of success on these points as well.

Our latest results should be gratifying to all of us here in Dufferin-Peel, since we are all involved, to one degree or another, in fostering the conditions for success in student achievement and well-being. Having said that, we recognize the need for further improvement and a refocusing of our efforts, particularly in mathematics, in general, and at some schools, in particular. We will do this over the next year.

The Opposite of Geek

Ria Voros

Scholastic
Canada

Gretchen Meyers doesn't know exactly what went wrong, but life in the eleventh grade is beginning to suck. As if having a semi-nudist, food-obsessed family wasn't awkward enough, she has lost her best friend to the fanatical school swim team, and her chemistry grade is so close to negative digits that only emergency tutoring can save it. So far, so high school. Then James/Dean rolls into her life — also known as her zit-faced chemistry tutor James and his slightly less zit-faced cousin Dean. Kind-hearted rebels without a cause, they draw Gretchen out of classroom hell, and briefly the world seems full of possibility.

But everything changes over the course of one awful night.

Bewildered by harsh new emotions of grief and love, Gretchen realizes she must now decide who she wants to be and what it means to be loyal. Written partly in verse, as self-confessed poetry geek Gretchen finds new ways of expressing herself, The Opposite of Geek is a tale of haiku, high school, and heartache. Rich with humour, it explores all the anguished details of teenage life through the words of one girl who is finding her way.

GRADE 9 RETREAT

“Growing Together in Faith” – Grade 9 Retreat

On September 27th,  all Grade 9 d’Youville students travelled to the Brampton Soccer Centre to spend the day, in community, nurturing their relationship with God.  This is the second year that Grade 9 students have had the opportunity to celebrate a new beginning through this retreat format.  The day began with students reconnecting with their orientation Link Leaders through team building activities.    One of these activities included body surfing, in which students carried each other as one body.  Through this activity and others, students learned the importance of working together - instead of in competition - to reach a common goal.  Grade nine student, Kelly Tang, learned that “when we work together as a group, we can do things we could never do just by ourselves…we became one, and all helped each other, and all used our efforts to be able to do something.”  Following group activities, students were engaged by inspirational speaker, Alvin Law.  Alvin Law was born without arms and has faced many challenges in life as a result.  He learned to adapt to his environment and leads a very full life, travelling and sharing his unique story.   According to Jordan Lyons, it was Alvin Law’s attitude to “never give up” that inspired him the most, and Jessie Adjei realized that “no matter what condition you are in, you should make the best of it…and embrace life.”  Students built on their relationships with each other and God and, as Daniel Yeboah said, “there is a time and place for everything, so we had fun and we still connected with God.”

Through the activities, a community lunch, and a reflective prayer liturgy, students truly came together as one body.  Thank you to the Link Leaders for the connections you made and for being such excellent role models for the Grade 9 students.

-----------GIRLS NIGHT-------------

St. Marguerite d’Youville Catholic Secondary School hosted its 6th annual Girls Night In sleepover on Friday, November 9th from 6pm until Saturday morning at 8am. This initiative was hosted by the Safe Schools Committee and the LINK CREW student leaders. Each year the Link Leaders host the grade 9 girls for a night of fun and frivolity beginning with randomly selected groups featuring colourful t-shirts. The girls bonded over activities and workshops that focused on building community and dissuading bullying.

The evening began with guest speaker Becky Kellar-Duke, former Olympic Hockey Medalist. She encouraged our students with her inspirational message of focus, determination, and heart. After the opening ceremonies, students engaged in team building, discussed healthy relationships, relaxed at the d’Y café, and felt good about themselves at dance and yoga. Throughout the event, students were encouraged to mature into even happier, healthier, young women who treasure the Catholic value of friendship.

The grade 9 girls were re-introduced to the wide variety of resources, caring adults and student leaders that will support them throughout their high school journey. The evening ended with a sundae buffet, dance party, girl power movie and sleepover in the gymnasium. In the morning, the ladies enjoyed a community breakfast before saying goodbye to all of their new friends. Thanks to Ms. Monticciolo and her hospitality classes for preparing the sundaes and for making the cupcakes for the café!

Department of Sciences

Sciences at d'Youville

Sciences are For Everyone

The study of sciences is something that anyone can do. It simply requires interest and an inquisitive nature. Humans are naturally inquisitive about the world around them. Chemistry, physics and biology are disciplines of science which attempt to explain the world around us. Scientists from around the world have made wonderful contributions to our body of knowledge in the disciplines of science. Names such as Sir Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein and Charles Darwin are well-recognized. But what about Subramanyan Chandrasekhar? Or Rosalind Franklin? Or how about Ahmed Zewail? Each of these scientists have made significant contributions to the fields of astrophysics, biology and chemistry, respectively.

The teachers of sciences at d’Youville strive to foster a sense of ethnic and gender inclusiveness in our classes by making students aware that they can all contribute to the sciences no matter their background, culture, gender or abilities.

A Natural Curiosity

People use the scientific method in their everyday lives without being aware of it. It is a natural method of problem solving that can be used as a powerful tool in the sciences. Whether you are trying to figure out why the lights are off in your house, or whether you are trying to elucidate the biosynthesis pathway of a cellular metabolic product, the process is basically the same. Whether students go further in the world of science or not, these skills give them tools to be more critical and analytical in their daily lives.

A goal of the teachers of sciences at d’Youville is to help our students realize that they are already scientists, and to help them formalize their skills in this area by asking questions about the world around them, to propose hypotheses, and to design methods to test their hypotheses.

In Awe of God’s Creation

There has never been a time like the present in the world of science. Classical civilizations, aboriginal populations, even Newton and Einstein did not have the technological abilities available to us today. We have new ways of seeing the universe and all that is in it. About 13.7 billion years ago, the universe in a great flash, flared forth. Only now is the universe, in the form of a human, able to reflect on itself. Only recently have we developed the technology that allows us to see the light from that first flash of the universe’s existence. We now have a profoundly different understanding of our place in the universe as humans. This new situation calls for a new narrative. A new story of the universe. No longer can we view the earth as having been created with humans and other life placed upon it. Rather, we now understand that all life has come from the earth itself. The universe has taken 13.7 billion years to express itself in the wonderfully rich variety of life forms we see on the Earth today. In the words of Thomas Berry, “The planet Earth, once molten rock, now sings opera.” Humans have an incredible responsibility to care for this living system that we are a part of.

It is the goal of the department to instill a sense of stewardship of the earth in our students. With the environmental issues facing us today, it is hoped that students will carry this responsibility through their lives as they make choices and decisions that affect the future of the Earth.

“Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind.”
~ Albert Einstein

"The human person is the sum total of 15 billion years of unbroken evolution now thinking about itself."
~ Teilhard de Chardin

Link Crew Transition Program

“Strong Links Make Unbreakable Chains” – d’Y Link Crew

Link Crew is a transition program at d’Youville designed to help our new grade 9 students adjust to high school life. Link Crew is made up of a group of dedicated Grade 11 and 12 students from diverse backgrounds in our d’Youville community. Link Leaders are trained to act as positive role models and mentors steering grade 9’s in the right direction.

Link Leaders begin the year by hosting the grade 9 orientation at the end of August. The goal is to welcome grade 9’s to d’Youville, have them become familiar with each other and their surroundings, as well as promote several messages about how to be successful in high school. Link Leaders continue to assist grade 9’s with transition by acting as guides during grade 9 retreats, as well as through classroom visits.

Amongst hosting Guys Night and Girls Night In, Link Leaders visit Grade 9 classrooms to deliver three acitivties throughout each semester. The visits focus on understanding why people make the choices that they do and how others perceive the choices we make. Leaders facilitate discussions to help grade 9’s understand the importance of using perception when making choices in school and in life.  Students also receive information on which resources are available around the school in order to assist in their success in grade 9.

To help Grade 9’s prepare for their first set of high school exams, Link Leaders organize “Cocoa and Cram” - a study session designed to help ease the stress and anxiety of January exams. Students work closely with Link Leaders, having their questions answered and enjoy hot chocolate and snacks. A similar event "Lemonade and Learn" also runs in June.

Link leaders are also paired with grade 9 students as a part of our Peer-Mentorship Program.  This program provides many grade 9 students the guidance and one-on-one support in order to be successful; Link Leaders work to develop a strong rapport with their protégé and work very collaboratively with staff to ensure development and growth.

In November, Link Crew hosts the Annual “A Day in the Life”.  All grade 8 students from our feeder schools came to d’Y for the day while the current grade 9s participate in Take your kid to work day out of the school.  Each grade 8 student followed the schedule of a grade 9 student with the guidance and support of our Link Leaders and grade 9 teachers throughout the day.  Our grade 9 teachers do a fantastic job at giving the students a glimpse of what to expect in the subject area, as well as indicators to assist the students with choosing the appropriate level for their success in high school.

Once again, we will be offering a Link Crew Course for grade 11 students next year! Current grade 10 students who are interested in being Link Leaders for the next school year must select LEADRE on their registration and course selection submission to be considered for an interview. Please see any of the Link Crew Coordinators if you have any questions.

Special thanks to the grade 9 teachers who volunteered their time to provide support to the program and to the leaders.  Thank you to Mr. Greco and the Administration Team for always supporting our endeavors to build successful young individuals.

P. McAllister, E. McPhee, M. Brum-Porto, and K. McMullin

On Thursday September 11th, the Safe Schools Committee organized a “Guys Night” for grade 9 boys at d’Y.  The night began with a presentation by Professional Athlete Orlando Bowen. Orlando is dedicated to making a real tangible difference in the lives of today’s youth so they can be all they can be for their community, city, and society at large through positive high energy and initiative.  Students then participated in a competitive pasta eating contest, which built teamwork among each group.  After the challenge was completed, and the winners declared, students travelled to various workshops throughout the school.  The workshops enabled teachers and senior students to reach out to grade 9 students to form important bonds, build character, and promote the core values of Christian discipleship.  It also provided the grade 9 students with the knowledge of resources available to them at d’Youville.  The event would not have been a success without the help of our Link Leaders who worked with the grade 9’s throughout the evening.  Thanks to the teachers and support staff who volunteered their time to lead the workshops and supervise the events.  A special thanks to Paul Johnson (visiting CYW from Campian) for his amazing workshop, and to Nicole Bailey (our new CYW) for making such a positive impact on the students.
